Background:

The climate change threat demands urgent reductions of global greenhouse gas emissions. Governments around the world have committed to transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. This transition is happening at a rapid rate with new clean energy projects increasing exponentially. However, many countries do not have protocols and guidelines to help them to make forward-thinking strategic decisions and apply best practice to ensure a sustainable transition. Strategic Env

In partnership with IAIA and Environment and Development Services - International, Ciera developed guidance for conducting and managing strategic environmental assessments (SEA) of energy transition. This guidance detailed background on SEA, key issues associated with energy transition activities, including development of renewable energy options, retirement of coal-fired power plants and closure of associated coal mines, advice for policy and project planners, best practices for stakeholder involvement in SEA and guidance for institutions. The authors of the guidance are Barry Dalal-Clayton and Miles Scott-Brown.
