Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment of the Energy Transition in Indonesia
2022-2024
Location:
Indonesia
Date:
2022-2024
Background:
The energy transition refers to the transformation of the global energy sector from fossil fuels to zero carbon sources, reducing carbon diooxide emissions to mitigate climate change and limit global temperature rise.
Indonesia relies heavily on fossil fuels for power generation, contributing 90% of the overall installed capacity of 72 GW, half of which is produced from coal.
Energy transition in Indonesia entails the retirement of coal-fired power plants, closure of coal mines and development of renewable energy infrastructure and supporting infrastructure (including transmission lines and energy storage).
Services Provided:
Together with the Ministry of Finance (BKF), Ciera in partnership with PT Hatfield Indonesia developed a strategic environmental and social assessment (SESA), for Indonesia’s energy transition to assess and manage environmental and social risks and impacts associated with energy transition activities.
The SESA identified gaps in Indonesia's current programs and plans for the energy transition addressing health, environmental, and social issues and creating a strategic environmental and social impact management plan (SESMP), offering recommendations to address regulatory gaps and mitigate potential impacts identified during the assessment.
